Cameroon cotton producer visits Eastbourne!

The Mayor and Mayoress of Eastbourne Greg and Clare Szanto welcomed Oumarou Gadjere, a Fairtrade cotton farmer from Cameroon, along with members of Fairtrade Eastbourne during Fairtrade Fortnight.

Oumarou Gadjere is a member of the Heri Fairtrade coop and is their elected representative to the Cameroon Cotton Producers' Organisation (OPCC) Executive Board. The OPCC is a national organisation owned and run by 1,800 local cotton cooperatives.  It represents 360, 000 cotton farmers.  Initially three of the co-ops received Fairtrade certification in 2004 when the Fairtrade cotton pilot project was launched. Following the huge success of Fairtrade cotton sales, the number of certified co-ops has increased to 198, representing 32,000 farmers. In 2007 they sold 40% of their total production to Fairtrade buyers, some 2,850 tonnes of cotton fibre or lint.  As a result members and their communities now benefit from a range of projects that are funded by the Fairtrade premium and agreed democratically by the whole group. In 2005/06 this included seven health centres, 12 classrooms, nine cereal stores, nine ginning machines, 19 water supply projects and two rural electrification programmes.
